Often too much people tell us to get a mentor. Be it a spiritual mentor, a job mentor, etc, at some point in time everyone needs a guide. If you are still in doubts if you need a mentor or not, check out this article on the reasons why you actually do need a mentor.
So what makes someone a good mentor and not just someone trying to exploit you? I've seen guys claiming mentor-ship just so it's easier for them to "lure" the girls they mentor. In this article, I'll try to give you the qualities I would be looking for when am searching for a mentor.
1) They are EXPERTS in the Field.
A good mentor should be someone who is an expert in their field, and it should be the same field you want to embark in. If you want to be a professional athlete or dancer, having Mr Leo as a mentor will be the most useless decision you could ever make.. So it needs to be someone very enthusiastic in the field who has way more experience and way more success.
2) They should be willing to share their Experience.
A good mentor should be willing to teach you what he/she knows. The whole point in having a mentor is so you don't have to go through all the huddles and make the crazy mistakes your dumb self would normally do. It's one thing to know and entirely another to be able to clearly explain what you know - and to be willing to take the time to do it.
3) They give constructive Feedback.
A good mentor is someone who will be able to guide you, assess your strengths and weaknesses and provide this information as feedback so you can continue to grow in the new skills. They should be able to tell you point blank if you are being too lazy, or if you aren't using the right methods to achieve something.
4) They LISTEN.
A good mentor needs to be able to hear you out. They should be active listeners and they should be involved in the conversation. They can help you only if they fully understand what problems you are going through. If they always allow themselves to be interrupted by phone calls, people walking by during sessions then they are not actively listening to you.
5) They Value Learning.
A good mentor should encourage you to push more than your goals. A good mentor knows that while he is an expert, he doesn't know everything, and that is a valuable trait to look out for when finding a mentor. The should encourage you to step out of your comfort zone and learn more or upgrade your skill set.
So that's my list of Top Qualities you should be looking out for when searching for a mentor. Let me know your thoughts in the comment section below. Thanks for reading through.
