INSTRUCTIONS: Answer all questions in the sequence they appear.
Question 1 (6 marks)
1) Given that the probability for an individual to have a bad reaction following an injection
with a syringe is 0.001.
a) Determiner the probability that with a contingent of 2000 vaccinated persons, at most
three have a bad reaction. (2 marks)
b) Determiner the expected value and the variance. (2 marks)
2) Entry to a certain university is determined by a national test. The scores on this test are
normally distributed with a mean of 500 and a standard deviation of 100. John wants to be
admitted to this university and he knows that he must score better than at least 70% of the
students who look the test. John takes the test and scores 585. Will he be admitted to this
university? (7 marks)
Question 2 (12 marks)
A researcher is interested on the average age for young children to pronounce their first words
of the vocabulary. A study based on one thousand young children showed that the first
words of the vocabulary appear on average at 11.5 months with a standard deviation of
3.2 months. The distribution of ages is being normal, required:
a)
Evaluate the proportion of children who acquired their first words before 10 months.(4
marks)
b)
Evaluate the proportion of children who acquired their first words after 18 months.(4
marks)
c] Evaluate the proportion of children who acquired their first words between 8 and 12
months. (4 marks)
