4) How are concrete words different from abstract ones? Which of the following
passages makes use of concrete diction? Justify your choice with ample
examples: (3mks).
a) In the past, girls in rural communities had no facilities for bathing except those
offered by some neighbouring stream. In such circumstances a bathing suit was not
always a necessity, but if one was worn it was likely to consist of nothing more than
some discarded article of clothing tailored to fit the occasion.
b) Forty years ago, if the farmer’s daughter went swimming she swam in the crick
below the pasture, and if she wore a bathing suit, which was not as customary as
you may think, it was likely to be a pair of her brother’s outgrown overalls trimmed
with scissors as her discretion might suggest.
