IN ALL ANSWER TWO QUESTIONS
SECTION A:
1) Attempt with exemplification, the orthographic, lexicological, morphological and semantic definition of the
term ‘word’.
2) Lexico-semantic variants of a word taken together form its semantic structure or semantic paradigm. The
word face, for example, has the following semantic structure:
1. The front part of the head
2. Look, expression
3. Surface, facade
4. Figurative usages referring to Impudence, boldness, courage
5. Style of typecast for printing
Illustrate each of the semantic structures above with two phrases (in all, ten expressions)
SECTION B:
1) Compounding and blending; acronym and abbreviation are similar but distinctive processes in word
formation. Discuss with the aid of apt examples.
2) Provide clear examples to illustrate the assertion that the vocabulary of English is more ‘foreign’ than native.
3) What does the word ‘bull’ mean in each of the following sentences?
a) Beware of the bull!
b) I’m afraid that you will just have to take the bull by the horns.
c) Stop acting like a bull in a china shop!
d) Well done! You have hit the bull’s eye.
e) Don’t give me all that bull.
4) With apt examples, discuss the various information that an advanced dictionary can provide about a word.
