SECOND SEMESTER CONTINOUS ASSESMENT
Achoo! The common cold, W
HILE
not usually life threatening, can be a major downer. Who
wants to be home and in bed with a runny nose, cough, and sore throat? It happens more often;
than people like to think, though. According to the Mayo Clinic, students canget as many as six to ten
colds a year! If you understand the causes of the common cold and take precautions, you can
successfully avoid catching a cold.
A common cold is caused by virus. Many different viruses could be responsible for your
runny nose, but all of them have one thing in common: they're very contagious, which means, they
get passed along from person to person. A common cold virus can spread in the air when a sick
person coughs, sneezes, or even talks. It can also spread on object.
Avoiding a cold is fairly easy if you follow some simple rules. Wash your hands often. Make sure your
family keeps doorknobs and countertops clean. Don't share drinking glasses or silverware. Most
importantly, if it's possible, avoid being around sick people entirely. If you do happen to catch a cold,
sneezeor cough into your elbow,not into your hand, to helpkeep your cold from spreading to others.
No one likes to be sick!
