First Semester Examination- April 201
Duration: 03 hours
Answer all questions.
Exercise I: Study the text below and rewrite it in the appropriate tenses, without changing the meaning
(20mks)
Kwame Nkrumah is the President of Ghana. He writes a good deal before and after independence. He has even
written many works before he becomes the President. But what he likes most of all - and this may sound strange
- is to laugh. He will laugh out several times, like a man who bears no grudges, each time he is speaking in public.
He needs this so badly as he bears in mind that he is a politician. This grows to be a trade which endears him to me
and to all who know him. “Ghana is emerging and will not dip deeper in corruption” he will say. Some people
claim that he beseeches people to sing his praises but forsakes them when he misunderstands them. Often in
serious situations, he mistakes humour for food. Often I stick out my tongue, tread the floor like a lame man and
thrust my hand on my chest like an imbecile. Often he will laugh and can laugh the whole day when I try to amuse
him this way. Instead rumours spread that his source of strength springs from much eating not from his
attachment to fun. Therefore Kwame Nkrumah is a man of many virtues but also of many faults.
In spite of all, Kwame Nkrumah is a man of many virtues, but also of many faults. He wants hi 5 people to
have the self-respect he has for himself. “Life is hard” he says. “I know it,” he adds wryly. “I can hardly say life
has been easy for me. But I know where I want to go.” I want my people to tread the same path - to forget hardship
in the knowledge that the end is worth any effort, any sacrifice.”
