Instructions: Please answer all questions.
1.The first part of the practical of year two chemistry student of UBa is concerned with the preparation and the
analysis of doubles salts and complex salts.
(i)
Define double salts and complex salts. (2 marks)
(ii)
Give in tabular form two (2) differences and two (2) similarities between double salts and complex salts.
Give the name and the chemical formula of a double salt and a complex salt prepared during the practical section.
(4 marks)
2. A student of year two Chemistry prepared a double salt from 520 mg of iron(II) sulfate hexahydrated (molar mass
= 260 g/mol) and 264 mg of ammonium sulfate (molar mass = 132 mg).
(i)
Write the balance chemical equation of the reaction of iron(II) sulfate hexahydrated and ammonium
sulfate. (2 mark)

(i)
Briefly explained how a flame test is carry out. (2 marks)
(ii)
Give one advantage and one inconvenient to use the flame test for the identification of ions. List in
tabular form, five ions that can be identified using flame test and the observed colour during the flame test. (5
marks)
(iii)
List two (2) cations and two (2) anions that are identified using precipitation reactions.
