Instruction: Give a concise answer to each of the following questions
1-Define: Linear density, isotropic, crystal, symmetry axis, miller indices, unit cell, body centered
cubic (BCC),'"atomic packing factor. (16mks)
II- Name five properties of a mineral (5mks)
III- Calculate the miller indices for the plane with intercepts 2a, -3b and 4c along the crystallographic
axes (4mks)
IV- Determine the Miller Indices (hkl) of the shaded planes below. All steps are required (ie. Intercept,
reciprocals, reduction, etc ...) (6mks)
V- For the intercepts x, y and z with values of 3, 1 and 2 respectively, find the miller indices (2mks)
VI- On a simple cubic lattice of spacing = 1, draw the [100] [010] [110] and [111] directions. (6mks)
VII- Name five optical properties of common minerals and mineraloids (5mks)
VIII- Name and describe five elements of an optical microscope. (10mks)
IX- Describe ten important properties of minerals that you will use to identify minerals under the thin
section (l0mks)
X- Draw the directions [236], [203] and [211] in a cubic unit cell (6mks)
