2.15. EXERCISES
1.
Two fair coins are tossed. The event A is defined to be “exactly one head is tossed”. Determine P (A).
2.
We toss a red die and a blue die. Both dice are fair. We wish to find P (A), where A is the event “the total of
the numbers shown by the two-dice exceeds 3".
3.
An Irish rugby club contains 40 players, of whom 7 are called O’ Brien, 6 arc called O’ Connell, 4 are called
P’ Hara, 8 are called O’ Neill and there are 15 others. The 40 players draw lots to decide who should be captain
of the first team. Determine the probability that the captain of the 1
st
team is:
(i) called O’Brien or O’Connell;
(ii) not called either O’Hara or O’Neill. ,
4. A bent penny has the probability 0.8 of coming down heads when it is tossed. The penny is tossed six times.
What is the probability that it shows heads on every occasion?
5. Three letters are chosen at random (without replacement) from the word STATISTICS. What is the
probability that:
(i)
they are all the same;
(ii)
they are all consonants;
(iii)
